The winter brings interesting and dull veggies such as cabbage. Just found out you can do a lot with it. I received all kinds of cabbage in my weekly treats from the local food exchange program and was tired of stir frying it and making stew with red cabbage, balsamic vinegar and apples.

I was thinking about a winter salad which was easy to make using ingredients I had home (red, white cabbage, apples and walnuts) with the help of BBC Food!! The best source for help in the kitchen.

I finely sliced half of a red and white cabbage and mixed it in a big bowl with finely chopped shallots. Made this awesome mayonnaise from the Coleslaw recipe by following the 4 easy steps using elderberry vinegar since I didn’t have red wine vinegar. Never made mayonnaise before, but this recipe made it easy to make your own!

I didn’t have carrots, but threw in two apples cut in julienne and walnuts. Awesome! I think you can use all kinds of vegetables such as chicory or fennel too.The salad was ready in less than 30 minutes and approved to bring to a birthday brunch.
Two days ago we visited Object Rotterdam 2012. An initiative curated by Anne van der Zwaag to make art and design accessible for design lovers. A way to start collecting brilliant concepts and designs by presenting awesome limited editions objects. I also got to know designer Nienke Sybrandy, because Nalden wrote about her humorous ‘wachtende spijker’. The bubble blower called ‘Homo bulla est’ (Erasmus’ saying: mankind is just a bubble) was a project she highlighted, sometimes mistaken for a milk wisk haha you can email her and make this clever spoon part of your silverware!

I’m bomb rushed with digital stuff and think this event is awesome. A very cool off line experience which I recommend you to visit. The show will be held at the Westergasfabriek in Amsterdam from the 10th until the 24th of February 2012.

photo: Bio Diversity, 2009 Christophe Niemann (1970, Germany)Like all projects Non-Fiction push, I knew this event was also going to be good. We where all treated with sandwiches with sauerkraut and sausages from Mr Kitchen at the entrance. A good way arrive at the exhibition!

Olga and her team invited illustrators from all over the place to exhibit their humorous drawings. I was very happy that I could see very cool work from Dave Eggers, Christophe Niemann , Ian Stevenson , Olaf Breuning and Marc Johns. A lot of food and non-food related stuff which makes you, your friends, parents and you kids smile.

Bought myself a Christophe Niemann postcard to frame for in my Kitchen!
I am very fond of the stuff made by L&G Studio! A few months ago they made me super happy with a gift for my love, so he could learn to save some money. And the piggy bank was also something I like to look at haha. So now and then I check their blog out and find a reason for me to need something like this Parimeter Tray.
How do you call it anyway? I found a dozen of names for this egg in toast. Here’s a quick how-to in just three images. The images say enough, right? First, use a scone cutter to make a whole in your favorite bread (I used sourdough bread), heat a non - stick frying pan with awesome olive oil, toast your slice of bread and gently pour your egg into the hole. You can put a lid on the pan if you don’t have the patience to cook the egg. Like to have your egg yolk soft? Just keep an eye on the pan. When it’s ready (egg white cooked please) season, serve it with lettuce, your favorite chutney or organic truffle mayonaise. Ideal for your DIY breakfast and brunch!

Magnolia Bakery - Hype or Yummay?

My dearest, which inspired me to start this blog, surprised me with Magnolia Bakery iced cupcakes he bought before he took his flight back. The cupcake, notorious because of Carrie Bradshaw, were finally in my hands! Verdict? A very very sweet cupcake topped with tons of icing! Personally I’m more into cream cheese frosting instead of the butter with iced sugar. Hype? Partly, yess. But who cares ;) When I’m in NYC I’ll mos def drop by this place for the experience! So actually this is a semi-verdict. These babies came from 401 Bleecker St New York‎ NY‎, West Village near The Meatpacking district. http://www.magnoliabakery.com

My kid would have been a hot dog

Yep, if I had a kid. My friends at 290 Square Meters bought kids clothing for in their store after the birth of the owners son. Lovely clothing like Mini Rodini with hot dogs instead of corny cupcake prints.
I visited Italian restaurant Vasso with my sister the other day. We were in the center of Amsterdam walking from Dam Square to an unknown destination. My sis is sometimes more picky than me when it comes to food. Not necessary in how a place looks like, but in a way that you’d like to visit a cool spot where the atmosphere is like you are on a holiday or she rather eat home. I remembered an Italian restaurant a friend Manuela had mentioned. She lived in Italy and mos def knows good food. Vasso near het Spui it is!

Crime: Bruschetta, Spaghetti alle Vongole, Tiramisu della casa and sparkling water on the side.

Scene: Ristorante Vasso, Rozenboomsteeg 10-14, Amsterdam. This place was quite undercover. Lived in Amsterdam for years and didn’t know Vasso’s excistence. It’s in an alley near the American Book Center and Gartine. We walked into the restaurant located in a typical ‘Amsterdam building’ with narrow stairs and wooden beams. I love wooden beams! The interior was traditional yet clean. Looks gezellig, right?

Investigation: We received a very warm welcome from Vasso. A friendly Italian guy welcomed us with something simple as buonasera! You probably think: that’s normal! Well, it’s not. Amsterdam service is quite bad and a lot of international restaurants are run by people who unfortunately don’t mastered the cuisines, yet. I love the multicultural Amsterdam I live in, but really appreciate it when my sushi is served and made proper by a Japanese guy like Jiro.

Back to Vasso. We had the cutest Italian gal ever who served our table. She took the time to seat us and talk about the menu of day and where the dishes are made from. (So did her colleagues btw.) At the end I ordered spaghetti with Vongole (it’s one of my favorite dishes to eat) and my sister had the ravioli filled with spinach topped by tomato/ basil sauce. I felt full after the pasta and had no room at all for a main course. We didn’t want the evening to end so we ordered some delicious home made tiramisu with a cup of cappucino (which unfortunately, kept me awake). I recommend you to check Vasso out. Maybe join me when i’m checking the main courses out with a good glass of Italian wine?

Breakfast at Gartine

One of my favourite breakfast and lunch spots in the Centre of Amsterdam is called Gartine. Home made treats made from ingredients grown in the garden of the owners according the Slow food principles, served in a cute and antique decorated brasserie. Must visit!

This place is located in the most crowded place of Amsterdam. In an alley between the shopping streets Kalverstraat and the Rokin. A gem where one would pass by or found by lucky tourists.

The place is toooo cute for school and even the guys will love it too. Why? The menu has something for all. Yoghurt with dried fruits, scrambled eggs, French toast, sandwiches with cheeses from local farmers with homemade chutney and pastries to die for.

Plan your meetings here or treat your loved ones with a full breakfast served on great China and old school silver table ware. And the service is great!

Visit Gartine, Taksteeg 7, Amsterdam.
This was one of my reads during my trip to Tenerife. A title which you can call one of your new years resolutions for 2012. Kimberly, I think you are awesome and beautiful, yet you make me feel bad after Tenerife. What happened inTenerife, stays in Tenerife….

The Beauty Detox is a book which will give you many scientific insights about how humans are designed. What we used to eat, what changed our eating habits and how to take care of yourself so you’d look as great as Tina Turner when you’re 60+. I love Tina…

I strongly advice you to read this book if you want to eat more healthy and feel like you can conquer the world. And yes, you life once so go enjoy good food occasionally like I do. Otherwise I can’t write blog posts anymore and share tips where to eat good food in a enjoyable ambiance haha

Ice Cold Dorada

I’m more of a vino tinto than a beer kinda girl, unless it’s light beer and when I’m amongst tropical vibes. Call me an occasional beer drinker.

Arriving in Tenerife, Spain the whole airport was screaming: Welcome to the island of Dorada! Like the beer was a monument. So, to help boosting the Spanish economy and ofcourse not to offend the Canarian, I ordered Dorada on hot sunny moments instead of ordering a Coca Cola, Corona, Heineken or Carlsberg. Ordering non-Spanish beer in my honest opinion is just plain rude haha

When at the Canary Islands nothing can beat an ice cold glass of Dorada with olives, Boquerones (anchovies marinated in vinegar, served with olive oil and garlic) or fresh seafood like squid or tuna in vinaigrette available at the local tavernas, bars and cafe’s. Yes, the ones with over branded sunshades, plastic or metalic garden chairs on the terrace with light boxes on the facade with fonts graphic designers will loath or think it’s adorable. That’s Tenerife!

Don’t let the appearance fool you. When tapas are made with love and good ingredients, it’s made with just that no matter how the joint looks like. Order Dorada on the side and enjoy!

Looking for a more idyllic scenery? One with Spanish tiles and pictures of ladies dancing in their dotted dresses. You’d probably find more in mainland of Spain haha

Cava del Mencey - Santa Cruz

I wish I stayed at the new hotel across the street of Cava del Mencey. Why? The rest of Tenerife is quiet during the siesta and low season, the South is horror (only mass tourism where it’s impossible to eat Canarian food!) and staying at the capital is very practical if you’d like to see the best of Tenerife by car.

Okay, Cava del Mencey. I had to go to the ladies room after drinking gallons of water to prevent me from getting a headache from the sun and saw this cool place near Parque Garcia Sanabria. A cool designed wine bar where you can have good coffee and dinner. The menu written on the mirrors on the walls looked very promising.

And check out the espresso machine! Hot like a Ferrari haha I’m into kitchen gear as men into sportscars I guess. Need to know the brand. It’s gorgeous. Let me know if you can help me out.

Have a great time at Cava del Mencey Rbla. Gral. Franco,114 -38001 Sta. Cruz de Tenerife

Spanish Coffee Menu

….for Dummies haha Well, I need to explain the coffee menu to you. Cappuccino is served con leche (how most of us drink it, with foamy milk) or con crema (with cream), so you won’t get surprised if you get one with cream if you imagined a coffee with foamy milk. With cream is awesome btw. And I was about to swear off coffee, because I can ‘t deal with caffeine. You know what’s good too?

Cortado leche y leche as seen above. ‘White coffee’ (espresso with milk) with condensed milk what you see on the bottom. Looks pretty and it’s quite a treat :) make sure you’ll have a can at home to make your own Cortado leche y leche.

Need a cold shot and want to order ice coffee? It’s not the one you are used to at Starbucks, you coffee virgin! You’ll get a cafe con hielo, an espresso with one or two ice cubes in a glass on the side. Love this one too!

I must consider following a barista course in case my company wouldn’t be a success. Ok, I shouldn’t jinx my baby. Barista as a hobby that is. But you never know. Imagine a terrorist attack on the world wide web. It’s possible…I most def do something with food since it’s our basic need…

Food con Mojo

I love hot sauce and I always bring a bottle as a souvenir for my hot sauce collection at home. The ingredients of local hot sauces tell me a lot about the culture of a certain era before the ‘globalization’ of ingredients. Find it kind of interesting. I mean we can get McIlhenny Tabasco everywhere, but it’s hard to find sambal for example. And yes, Spain has been influenced in the past which you can call the early globalization actually. The bananas where the Canarian make their Cobana liqueur from comes from South East Asia, almonds where the Canarian make paste and sweets from are originally from the middle east and the chillies for mojo is globally introduced by Columbus and brought from South America.

Mojo Picante
Like a lot of Caribbean and Asian countries, Tenerife has its own hot sauce too. Mojo picante is the well known Canarian hot sauce served with new potatoes (Papas con mojo picon like what you see in the picture) cooked in sea salt. The sauce is made from oil, vinegar, salt, pepper, garlic, parsley, cumin and Spanish red peppers blended together. I recommend you to try it out and make your own when you’re home. Makes a good dip!

Mojo verde
Island visits asks for seafood! Fresh fish or squid, what I’ve ordered. The picture is missing, but it was something like this: Grilled squid with an ‘after’ marinade made from salted butter, garlic and parsley served with mojo verde. An interesting greenish sauce made from oil, garlic, salt, pepper, a lot of parsley and cumin. Ideal for your grilled seafood dishes!

*The picture was taken in Orotava, Tenerife

Churreria Chocolateria El Guanche - Candelaria

Greedy as I was… lured by the smell of fresh fried Churros… as was the cute chubby boy who just came from Judo class and ordered tons of Churros, I bought a bag full of Churros as well! 5 pieces for 1€ with a cup of dark chocolate sauce.

Just ate one and a half Churro…I was so full and will leave fried pastries alone for a couple months, I guess. It was worth it though in combination with the ambiance at the square of the Basilica of Candelaria.

Good Churros from El Guanche could be found on the corner of Calle de los Principes and Calle Obispo Perez Caceres. Watch out for this sign haha

One of the last three sub tropical cloud forests can be found at the Anaga Mountains north of Tenerife, called Bosque de Las Mercedes. It’s quite chilly there, so make sure you bring a jacket and a scarf. This place is ideal for walks and picnics if you love the bush and need some time with nature before going to the touristic and mass playas. The Mercedes woods are beautiful!
