Egg in the basket?

How do you call it anyway? I found a dozen of names for this egg in toast. Here’s a quick how-to in just three images. The images say enough, right? First, use a scone cutter to make a whole in your favorite bread (I used sourdough bread), heat a non - stick frying pan with awesome olive oil, toast your slice of bread and gently pour your egg into the hole. You can put a lid on the pan if you don’t have the patience to cook the egg. Like to have your egg yolk soft? Just keep an eye on the pan. When it’s ready (egg white cooked please) season, serve it with lettuce, your favorite chutney or organic truffle mayonaise. Ideal for your DIY breakfast and brunch!

Reunion at Le Pain Quotidien

Crime: mint tea, fruit and yoghurt (low carb day haha)

Scene: Le Pain Quotidien, Cornelis Troostplein 2, Amsterdam, de Pijp

Investigation: Food relates to a lot of memories and some places are ideal for retrieving some and to cathc up what we’ve missed out on each other.

Last weekend I hooked up with an high school friend and had some breakfast at organic bakery Le Pain Quotidien. We selected this place because it was between my house and his. A packed place in de Pijp with a wooden interior like a mix between an authentic old school village bakery and chain Bagels & Beans.

Although the styling was good it reminded me of a place like uber chain Starbucks, which I can give heads up to for the fantastic branding. Can’t hate on that haha A nice décor, but slightly overpriced for what you get and I’m not cheap haha. The place is not as cosy than for example another bakery chain de Bakkerswinkel.

I haven’t taste the specials or breads yet like the multi grain or spelt, but give that a try another time when I’m in the neighbourhood. The place is ‘aight’, great service and it’s an ideal place to have long chats with drinks.

Millau Market

If you happen to be in the neighborhood of Millau. Enjoying the weather, nature, sporting or the food. Check out their farmers market every Wednesday morning. An ideal place to have breakfast or buy some goodies for a picnic.

Tons of sweet local fruits, honey, jam, quiches, cheeses and breads. All home made and sold by their proud makers from Aveyron.

I recommend the delicious quiches with tomato, jams and South French sweet bread ‘Fouace’ made with orange blossom water. It’s something like the Dutch Duyvekater (sweet white bread made with melted butter, lemon zest and milk). Can’t wait visiting this place again. The French sure know what good food is.

What to do with left over bread
My Nalden loves bread, only fresh baked bread. Which means (most of the time) that I have to eat the whole loaf by myself (8) All-by-my-self - Celine Dion (8) or throw it away, because he refuses to eat it or bluntly forgets the loaf. Everyday fresh bread and the next day in the bin? What a luxury! Don’t let my mom read this one. So a few solutions what to do with your bread than throw it away. One or two day old bread is perfect for toasted dishes.
8 Things to do with your old bread! 1.Toast with Jam or Eggs Put some slices of bread in the toaster and make some cooked, fried, poached or scrambled eggs and tadaaa breakfast is served!
2. Croque Monsieur or Croque Madame (grilled - fried cheese sandwich) Or you can grill two sandwiches with cheese (gouda, mozzarela, goatscheese) and meat or with veggies such as (sundried) tomato, onion, jalapeno or peppers. Serve with tomato ketchup or soup.
3. Croutons for salad or pasta Rub some garlic on your slices of bread, than cut the bread in little pieces and fry in a pan. Throw them in your salad or pasta. The bread will absorb the oil, herbs and the sauce which gives your meal a lot of flavour.
4. ‘Pizza’ Heat the oven on 225 degrees celcius. Spread some ketchup, tomato sauce or puree on the slices of bread, put some baked onions on them and (grated) cheese or cheddar, sprinkle a bit oregano, grill until the cheese is melted and the bread is brown. Tadaa a (late night) snack or lunch. Serve with a salad for the greens.
5. Bread pudding You can use every old bread with mixed pieces with dried out cake or raisinbread. As long as the bread is dry so that it can absorb the (coconut) milk, some eggs (depends off how much breadpudding you make) with (vanilla) sugar. You can sprinkle cinnamon or some orange or lemon zest. Tadaa when fresh out of the oven an ideal dessert with or without ice cream.
6. French Toast Make a mixture of two eggs with milk or cream with (vanilla) sugar and dip the slices of bread in it, until it soaks through with the batter. Fry in an hot, buttered frying pan. Serve with a mixture of sugar and cinnamon powder.
7. Bruschetta Cut some tomato in little cubes and season with salt and black pepper. Grill or toast slices of bread until crispy and rub a clove of garlic on the bread. Put some tomato on it and drizzle  (extra virgin) olive oil and put some fresh leaves of fresh basil if you have.
8. Meatballs Mix mince meat with an egg, fried onions and bread, season and make some balls.  Fry or bake for in tomato sauce or with gravy next to your potatoes. Or just eat it!
